Mortimer J. Adler remains one of the great philosophical realists of the present age. Unfortunately, Dr. Adler died on June 28, 2001. You may recall his name from being associated with the famous Great Books program. He is unpopular with many of today's "philosophers" because he is outspoken, sticks to his guns, and challenges them where they do not want to be challenged.

The Radical Academy is proud to host The Mortimer J. Adler Archive.

How to Read a Book by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren should be part of everyone's personal library. It is a classic first published in 1940. It has never been out of print. It is now completely revised and updated, and is considered the classic guide to intelligent reading.

Mortimer J. Adler is the "philosopher for everyman." This book is a guide to the big questions of the human condition, the questions all of us ask at some point during the course of our life. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of the literature, history, and philosophies of Western civilization, Adler considers what is meant by language, truth, democracy, emotion, law, and other abstract concepts. This is a remarkable and contemplative distillation of the Great Ideas of Western Thought. (Edited by Dr. Adler's long-time colleague Max Weismann.)

This enlightening study is the result of group discussions at Dr. Adler's annual seminar in Aspen, Colorado, and conversations between Dr. Adler and Bill Moyers.
